EL AL Participates in National Commemoration Initiative in Collaboration with Shem VeNer and Yad Vashem

On the occasion of Holocaust Remembrance Day in Israel, EL AL is participating in a large-scale national commemoration initiative by Shem VeNer in collaboration with Yad Vashem. As part of this initiative, thousands of personal memorial candles with the names of Holocaust victims will be distributed to passengers on EL AL flights.

Starting this evening, with the beginning of Holocaust Remembrance Day, and throughout all flights tomorrow, EL AL passengers will receive a personal memorial candle, representing one individual among the six million. The initiative aims to create a moment of pause during the journey, transforming it into a meaningful moment of personal and national connection to remembrance.

As Israel's national airline, transporting tens of thousands of passengers from all over the world daily, EL AL attaches great importance to leading initiatives that connect national remembrance with our daily lives.

The candles will be distributed on EL AL flights from numerous destinations, including North America, Europe, and the Far East, ensuring that the memory of the six million victims lives on in Jewish and Israeli communities worldwide.

Levy Halevy, CEO of EL AL, states: “As a national airline that carries the flag of the State of Israel around the world, we have both the privilege and the duty to connect Israel with the world and to carry the memory with us. The partnership with Shem VeNer allows every passenger to pause for a moment, engage with the story of a deceased person – with their name and the life cut short – and carry that memory forward. In this time, we remember our commitment to humanity, to memory, and to our identity as Israelis and as Jews.”

Tzvika Fayirizen, General Director of Yad Vashem, states: “Yad Vashem is committed to preserving the memory of Holocaust victims for future generations, with a focus on the personal stories of those who perished. The joint initiative with Shem VeNer and EL AL is another meaningful way to make remembrance accessible in non-traditional settings. It enables a personal, direct, and impactful encounter with the memory of the Holocaust, strengthening our shared societal commitment to commemoration, education, and remembrance.”

Rucha Vaknin Shaar, CEO of Shem VeNer, adds: “Holocaust Remembrance Day is not only a day of reflection but also a moment of responsibility. With time and the progressive decline in the number of living Holocaust survivors, the responsibility to commemorate and pass on the memory falls to us. Our initiative offers a simple yet profound way to participate in remembrance: a personal act that connects each individual with a name, a story, and the identity of a deceased person. I thank EL AL for making it possible for memory to travel with people, reach new places, and live on beyond familiar boundaries.”
