Authentic Christmas in the Alps: Aosta Valley Invites You

Aosta / Frankfurt am Main, December 12, 2025 | The scent of roasted chestnuts mingles with the spicy aroma of mulled wine, while fresh snow gently falls on the illuminated roofs of ancient villages and towns. In the narrow streets between Roman ruins and medieval towers, Christmas carols echo – sometimes in Italian, sometimes in French, often in the local Patois. Welcome to the Aosta Valley in the most beautiful time of the year, when Italy's smallest region, nestled between Monte Bianco, Matterhorn, and Gran Paradiso, awakens into an alpine Christmas fairy tale.

It is the contrasts that make the Aosta Valley so unique during Advent: snow-capped four-thousanders above medieval villages, the blend of Italian warmth and alpine down-to-earthness, and tradition that is not just displayed in a museum but lived. Here, Christmas is not staged for tourists but celebrated with them. Here, it's not about consumption, but about craftsmanship. Not about hustle and bustle, but about slowing down. Not about the perfect photo, but about genuine moments. And all of this surrounded by mountains that already impressed the Romans.

Christmas Market between History and Craftsmanship
Since November 22, Piazza Chanoux in Aosta has been transformed into an atmospheric mountain village. But the “Marché Vert Noël” is far more than a classic Christmas market. It is a journey through the craftsmanship of the Aosta Valley. Amidst festively decorated wooden huts, artisans tell their stories. There's the soap manufacturer who has been working according to old recipes for generations, there's the ceramist, and at another stall, artfully carved wooden figures are stacked – each one unique.

Those who stroll along the stalls not only smell mulled wine and cinnamon but also the strong Fontina cheese, the spicy Lardo d'Arnad on fresh bread, and the sweet TéGole. The latter are wafer-thin almond biscuits that are as much a part of every Aosta Valley Christmas as snow is to the mountain peaks. The market opens its doors daily until January 6, 2026. In the evening hours, when the fairy lights begin to glow and their sparkle reflects in the old cobblestones, that magic arises which makes Christmas in the Aosta Valley so unmistakable.

Ice Skating under the Starry Sky
Barely a hundred steps from the market hustle and bustle, a natural ice rink has been inviting people to skate since November 15. When children take their first wobbly steps on the ice, while Christmas lights twinkle in the background and laughter and music drift over from the market, all Christmas hectic is immediately forgotten. It becomes particularly atmospheric in the late evening hours on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, when the rink remains open until 2:00 AM, and night owls skate their rounds under the starry sky. The ice rink will remain on Piazza San Francesco until January 11, 2026.

Nutcracker Magic on Historic Walls
About 40 kilometers from Aosta, a special kind of spectacle has been waiting since December 7 at the imposing Fortress of Bard. As dusk falls, a magical staging begins on Piazza d'Armi: “The Nutcracker” – E.T.A. Hoffmann's timeless story. And the story here is not just told, but experienced. State-of-the-art video mapping technology brings the historic facades to life. To the unforgettable sounds of Tchaikovsky's classics, light figures dance across the centuries-old masonry, colors explode in all shades. It is a 360-degree experience of light, music, and history that brings the fortress walls to life until January 6, 2026.
