Spring in Aosta Valley – ideal for multi-generational holidays
Aosta / Frankfurt am Main, April 14, 2026 | Traveling together, but in a way that everyone benefits – that's easier said than done. Italy's smallest valley achieves exactly that: In the Aosta Valley, the whole family hikes through the Gran Paradiso National Park, stands together at up to 3,466 meters altitude, and delves into a thousand years of castle history – and for those who wish, discovers ibexes up close or climbs through the nearest adventure park.
The Valley of a Hundred Castles
A tower or fortress crowns almost every rocky outcrop – no wonder the Aosta Valley in Italy bears this nickname. For multi-generational families, the Fortress of Bard is an ideal first port of call. While children discover the wildlife of the Western Alps in the Alpine Museum, adults delve into special exhibitions on the region's settlement history – and grandparents stroll through the extensive plains of the fortress, which held Napoleon at bay for two weeks in 1800. Those who prefer to admire medieval frescoes will find them in Castello di Fénis with its double ring wall. The Regional Museum of Natural Sciences in Saint-Pierre, specially designed for young visitors, offers a different approach to the region.
Ibexes, Peaks, and 360-Degree Views
On the way to Gran Paradiso National Park, a testament to Roman engineering awaits near Aymavilles: the Pont-d'Ael aqueduct bridge, accessible via a circular hike from the village. In the park itself, families frequently encounter ibexes and chamois in spring, as they stay at lower altitudes during this season – many paths are flat enough for strollers or people who are not quite as sure-footed. Those who want to go even higher can take the new Pila–Couis–Stella gondola lift: Since December 2025, it connects the Pila ski resort to Stella di Pila at 2,723 meters in just 15 minutes. The whole family stands together at the top – with a 360-degree view of the four highest peaks of the Alps, without anyone having to take a single step uphill. It only gets more spectacular with the Skyway Monte Bianco in Courmayeur. It carries visitors up to Punta Helbronner at 3,466 meters – with breathtaking views directly of the highest peak in the Alps, Mont Blanc.
Active by Day, Enjoy by Evening
Almost every valley has its own climbing park with courses for different age groups – from Antey-Saint-André to Champoluc and the Pila Adventure Park right near Aosta. Those who prefer a quieter pace can visit the Parc Animalier wildlife park in Introd, where alpine animal species can be experienced in a natural environment – an excursion that delights all generations. Numerous easy hiking routes, some even accessible with a stroller, complement the offerings for all generations. Along the way, a detour to the traditional cheese dairies and farm shops in the valley is worthwhile. Towards evening, the Aosta Valley condenses to the essentials: Fontina, Polenta, a glass of red wine from Adret. For the grandparent generation, it is often precisely these moments that make a trip unforgettable: a stroll through a village that seems to have forgotten time, or a long evening at dinner, when the youngest recount their day's adventures.
Holidays for Everyone
For several years, the Aosta Valley has been consistently working to make its offerings barrier-free. Through the project "Abilmente", several ski resorts in the region are inclusively developed: with trained staff, adapted aids, and accessible accommodations and restaurants. In summer, the offerings expand to hiking trails and cultural routes. This is a crucial factor, especially for travel groups with older members or people with special needs.
